Search Engine Terminology

A host of phrases and terms are used in online marketing and search engine optimization. Here is a list of some of the terms currently used in this market.

Bid for Click

A search engine advertisement by which you bid for your website to be ranked using a particular keyword. You pay that price when someone clicks on your paid advertisement.

Bot

A search engines program that crawls the internet adding websites to the search engines list in a database.

Boolean search

A form of search allowing the inclusion or exclusion of documents containing certain words through the use of specific operators (AND, NOT and OR).

Code

The progamming language that runs a website. In addition to HTML/XML, this can include: JavaScript, ASP, PHP, SQL, etc.

Concept search

A search for documents related conceptually to a word, rather than specifically containing the word itself

Crawl

The form of movement a search engine spider/bot uses in order to follow the links within or between websites.

Directory

A list of web sites that is compiled under categories and sub-categories. For example Yellow Pages is a directory.

HTML

The basic programming language through which websites are created.

Inbound Link

Income links to your website.

Index

The searchable "catalog" of documents created by search engine software.

Key Term or Phrase

The sequence of keywords used by someone using a search engine to try and find your website.

Keyword Concentration

The amount of time a keyword shows as compared to other characters or word on a webpage.

Keyword Research

Researching the most effective key terms or phrases to be used in online marketing (search engine optimization).

Keyword Search

A search for documents containing one or more words that are specified by a user.

Keyword Spamming

Deliberate repetition of keywords in a page by using invisible or tiny text to increase keyword density. Most search engines blacklist or banned websites practising these methods.

Link Relevancy

The similarities between two websites in content/services etc.

Meta Tags

Specific HTML tags that allow search engines to easily find relevant website data. Meta tags alone no longer play an integral role in search engine optimization..

Website Optimization

The process of altering the code, structure, content, titles and meta information in a website to make it search engine friendly.

Outbound Link

An external link from your website.

Pay Per Click

A search engine advertisement, that charges you a fixed amount of money every time your listing is clicked on.

Query-By-Example

A search where a user instructs an engine to find more documents that are similar to a particular document.

Reciprocal Link

A two way link between two websites (E.g. A linking to B, and B linking to A).

Search Engine

The software that searches an index and returns matches. Search engine is often used synonymously with spider and index, although these are separate components that work with the engine.

Search Engine Positioning

The practice of making websites rank well in search engines.

Spider

The software that scans documents and adds them to an index by following links. Spider is often used as a synonym for search engine.
