There are a wide range of different search engines with different practices, advantages and payment methods. These search engines can basically be broken down in to two groups; ‘Free’ and ‘Paid’ search engines.
Free search engines have submissions that are free. It is very much possible to get into a search engine without having to submit to it because of information sharing between search engines and the ‘spidering bots’ crawling the web indexing content from websites. However, to make sure and be properly optimized, it is a good idea to submit to all of the important search engines. The major free search engines include Google, MSN (Live), Yahoo, Ask, AllTheWeb, Altavista, Lycos, Looksmart, DMOZ, AOL, Netscape.
Paid search engines require some form of payment to be listed with them. The payment and listing methods vary for each search engine:
Pay Per Click – This is the most popular form of payment with search engine, they charges you a set fee every time someone clicks on a listing of your site.
Pay For Inclusion – Search engines charge a fee to be listed with them. For Example; Yellow Pages Directory; which charges a fee to be included in its directory.
Bid For Click - This form of submission auctions positions in its listings under specific keywords. The winning bidder receives the number one position with the chosen term. Every time your listing is clicked, your bidding price (ranging from under 10c per click to over $30, depending on keyword) is deducted from your account.
